There are many health benefits associated with hydrating the physical body with pure, revitalizing drinking water. The amount of water that each of us requires may differ from one person to another depending on lifestyle, health, metabolism, and physical activity. The water we drink, like our food, should be as free from contaminants as possible. I drink spring water from Rocky Ridge Drinking Water Limited in Peterborough, Ontario. Their spring water is transported and stored in stainless steel tanks and continuously re-circulated through ultraviolet light. Moderate amounts of alkaline minerals are present such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium. They offer two other types of drinking water, distilled and reverse osmosis.
Drinking healthy water helps the body to function effectively. Water is very important for regulating oxygen levels and blood volume. In addition, it also helps to move essential nutrients through to be digested and absorbed. Water supports this vital process as well as maintaining the balance that must occur between electrolytes, cells, muscles, and so on.
Water assists our brains to be more attuned, focused, and alert. When the body is hydrated, we are less likely to become moody, tired, and sore. We love our H2O as it also supports the body's organs, glands, blood, blood pressure, and digestive tract resulting in a healthier immune system. Our ability to remove waste and toxins also depends on fluids (especially water) that are utilized within the body.
Remember to hydrate yourself at the beginning of your day and continue to drink water as your thirst signals you to do so. If you don't have a desire or natural response to drink water, take a few mouthfuls every 20 - 30 minutes to ensure you are hydrating yourself and supporting your overall health throughout the day.
Infuse Your Drinking Water
You can infuse drinking water to energize it with healthy plant properties such as fresh mint and other herbs (or, second choice, cold brew organic herbal blends). Add celery, parsley, cilantro, lemon, lime, ginger, even Ceylon cinnamon (the real cinnamon), and a dash of cayenne pepper and pinch of mountain salt. Experiment with these toxin busters until you find a taste you like. This will increase your intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, electrolytes, and other beneficial properties. I add a drop of extra virgin olive oil to keep my lips moisturized, especially in the colder months.
Save coffee or tea time for 3-5 hours after you rise and shine. Start your day with a tall glass of rejuvenating, healthy water that has been infused with plant foods. Infused water helps to cleanse and hydrate the body, strengthen the immune system, and calm the nervous system while assisting the brain to be focused and alert.
Add some zing to your drinking water with nutrient-rich foods:
Fruits - lemon, lime, berries, cherries, pomegranate seeds, cucumber (yes, cucumber is a fruit), oranges, and other nutritious fruits.
Herbs - mint varieties, celery including the leaves, thyme, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, and hibiscus, to name a few.
Ginger - a fall and winter warmer (or anytime) that also boosts the immune system
Lettuces - purple and red lettuce for additional antioxidants and minerals.
Do your best to use glass containers for infusing and storing water including your on-the-go water bottle or vessel. Most plastics and some metal containers are made from toxic materials that are not safe for use.
