FARMERS BUTCHER SHOP

The Farm-To-Table Philosophy

Matt De Vries is the owner and face of Farmers Butcher Shop in Lindsay, Ontario. This thriving business opened its doors in 2018 with Matt and co-owner Wahab Zamani. Both men share the farm-to-table philosophy with a focus on meat products that can be traced to their farming roots.

Matt and Wahab work directly with local farmers to promote quality products that are made on small family-run farms. They are ethical butchers who are paying close attention to what animals are being fed and how they are treated. Grazing animals help the growth of grasses and other wild plants while turning up soil. Healthy manure adds fertilizer to the land which ensures a future food supply that is natural and sustainable.

For the last 10 years, Matt has run his own farm northwest of Lindsay. He reveals, “I do this because I love what I do.” Matt is currently producing grass-fed finished beef, meaning the cattle are not fed corn or soy. Family farming is what Matt knows best. He’s a proud husband and dad who keeps busy with his wife Cassie as they raise their two sons, ages six and nine. Cassie has recently purchased the Eye Care Centre in Lindsay.

Farmers Butcher Shop has an exceptionally clean and friendly environment. Matt appreciates his hard-working staff and their attention to great customer service. The shop has a wide range of quality meats. In addition, you’ll find a local selection of tasty spices, rubs, meat pies, perogies, dairy, and more. Fresh salmon, Ontario pickerel as well as rainbow trout are available from Thursdays to Saturdays.

You can self-serve from the freezer section or ask for fresh cuts that are showcased in the traditional way. From classic and custom selections to large orders, expert staff are happy to serve you. They can also assist with special orders for certain dietary restrictions and hard-to-find meat products.

YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT CLOSE TO HOME

Matt De Vries is passionate about supporting local growers and producers. He believes in the integral role one has with regard to sustaining family-farm businesses while nourishing the community.

RIVER WINE WORKS

There’s pride and joy in making wine to share with others.

We have a thirst for helping wine enthusiasts to create their favourite wine styles from start to finish. Great service and expertise are what we're all about at our fine establishment in Lindsay, Ontario - just a minute’s walk from the heart of the downtown area.

Whether you're a novice or a seasoned winemaker, you’ll find the ideal match for your palate. This great DIY interest saves money and is a perfect gift for any wine lover. The process of making fine wine at River Wine Works is rewarding and managed within a clean and organized environment. We utilize new equipment that's sterilized and safe.

Making wine can take 4 to 10 weeks. When reading about the various wines that are crafted, you can almost taste the distinguishing qualities of the finished product. For example, a Cabernet Sauvignon has a rich, full flavour of blackberry, mint, black currant, cedar, and spice. Amarone has a distinct, fruit character with black cherry and subtle notes of brown sugar and chocolate.

Do you want a wine that is light or full-bodied, with an earthy depth, or exceptional fruity note? The popular DIY red wines at our establishment are Pinot Noir, Valpolicella, Super Tuscan, and Shiraz. Cabernet Sauvignon and Amarone are their number-one-selling red wines. Preferred white wines are Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Moscato and Riesling are also available.

If fruit wine is desired, River Wine Works offers defined flavours such as strawberry, blueberry, razzberry, peach, cherry, green apple, cranberry, and blackberry. The perfect summer drink while relaxing. Red and White Sangria, already mixed with spice and fruit, are also popular in the warmer months. The refreshing character of White Sangria has an apricot and peach essence with a hint of grapefruit zest. Cheers!

For more information, visit www.riverwineworks.com or call 705.324.3098. Come on by for a visit at 10 York Street N., Lindsay ON  K9V 3Z6.

The name of a business usually has a unique story behind it that distinctly connects the origins and owner. Jason Northey and Poppa Ed’s Taxi are no exception. Poppa, Ed Peters, was well known in the Lindsay community for his charity work and also for the business he owned, Lindsay United Taxi. He also contributes wholeheartedly to his local and surrounding communities.

Jason is a member of Kawartha Charity Riders RC. They are involved with important events and charitable causes within the local communities. To donate or participate, please visit www.kcr-rc.ca for more information. You can also contact the charitable organizations mentioned below.

Owner Jason and the staff at Poppa Ed’s Taxi give generously to the community that supports them. ECOWATER U-FILL & MORE

Our U-fill jug water stages of purification:

  1.  Heavy metal and chlorine filtration

  2.  Water softening

  3.  Sediment pre-filtration

  4.  Reverse osmosis

  5.  Ozone sanitizing

  6.  Oxygen-enriched storage tank

  7.  Stainless steel dispensing pump

  8.  Ultraviolet sterilization

  9.  Polishing filtration

10.  Laboratory-grade dispensing station

We sanitize the station with hydrogen peroxide, not chlorine.

Our process: Chlorine and heavy-metal filtered; softened water passes through 3 commercial-grade reverse-osmosis membranes to an oxygen-enriched tank. When dispensed, water is further ultraviolet - and ozone - disinfected and polished with coconut shell carbon filtration. There is a minimum of contact with metal to avoid re-ionization. The product is ultra-pure water.

In addition, we offer 're-mineralized' water with calcium and magnesium to near 8.5 pH, supplying the body with essential minerals while enhancing drinking taste. This product is slightly alkaline, ultra-pure water.

Water Softeners

A water softener should remove the minerals that cause ‘hardness’ in water; mostly calcium and magnesium. We have a range of equipment to address these as well as chlorine, sulfur, high T.D. S. (total dissolved solids), and methane. We like to take a water sample to find out what’s in your water before recommending any equipment.

Hair and skin are softer, your washer uses less detergent, and heating your water uses much less energy when you have ‘soft’ water. Softening water will extend the lifetime of plumbing and water-using appliances.

EcoWater equipment is manufactured in North America.

Click on FOOD & DRINK in the Navigation/Dropdown Bar and scroll down to view Ads for Bowmanville ECOWATER, and North Durham ECOWATER (under Port Perry).

McLeod's ECOWATER is under Peterborough (or Click on HOME & GARDEN PG. 2 in the Navigation/Dropdown Bar for McLeod's ECOWATER). Highly-trained, experienced technicians are available to help improve the quality of water in your whole home, at the farm, cottage, or commercial space.

Infuse Your Drinking Water

by MARI L

There are many health benefits associated with hydrating the physical body with pure, revitalizing drinking water. The amount of water that each of us requires may differ from one person to another depending on lifestyle, health, metabolism, and physical activity. The water we drink, like our food, should be as free from contaminants as possible. I drink spring water from Rocky Ridge Drinking Water Limited in Peterborough, Ontario. Their spring water is transported and stored in stainless steel tanks and continuously re-circulated through ultraviolet light. Moderate amounts of alkaline minerals are present such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium. They offer two other types of drinking water, distilled and reverse osmosis.

Drinking healthy water helps the body to function effectively. Water is very important for regulating oxygen levels and blood volume. In addition, it also helps to move essential nutrients through to be digested and absorbed. Water supports this vital process as well as maintaining the balance that must occur between electrolytes, cells, muscles, and so on.

Water assists our brains to be more attuned, focused, and alert. When the body is hydrated, we are less likely to become moody, tired, and sore. We love our H2O as it also supports the body's organs, glands, blood, blood pressure, and digestive tract resulting in a healthier immune system. Our ability to remove waste and toxins also depends on fluids (especially water) that are utilized within the body.

Remember to hydrate yourself at the beginning of your day and continue to drink water as your thirst signals you to do so. If you don't have a desire or natural response to drink water, take a few mouthfuls every 20 - 30 minutes to ensure you are hydrating yourself and supporting your overall health throughout the day.

Infuse Your Drinking Water

You can infuse drinking water to energize it with healthy plant properties such as fresh mint and other herbs (or, second choice, cold brew organic herbal blends). Add celery, parsley, cilantro, lemon, lime, ginger, even Ceylon cinnamon (the real cinnamon), and a dash of cayenne pepper and pinch of mountain salt. Experiment with these toxin busters until you find a taste you like. This will increase your intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, electrolytes, and other beneficial properties. I add a drop of extra virgin olive oil to keep my lips moisturized, especially in the colder months.

Save coffee or tea time for 3-5 hours after you rise and shine. Start your day with a tall glass of rejuvenating, healthy water that has been infused with plant foods. Infused water helps to cleanse and hydrate the body, strengthen the immune system, and calm the nervous system while assisting the brain to be focused and alert.

Add some zing to your drinking water with nutrient-rich foods:
Fruits - lemon, lime, berries, cherries, pomegranate seeds, cucumber (yes, cucumber is a fruit), oranges, and other nutritious fruits.

Herbs - mint varieties, celery including the leaves, thyme, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, and hibiscus, to name a few.

Ginger - a fall and winter warmer (or anytime) that also boosts the immune system
Lettuces - purple and red lettuce for additional antioxidants and minerals.

Do your best to use glass containers for infusing and storing water including your on-the-go water bottle or vessel. Most plastics and some metal containers are made from toxic materials that are not safe for use.

Dodd & Souter Flooring

Celebrating Over 60 Years!

Quality Service Meeting Your Needs

Michelle Ulch is a member of the Dodd & Souter family business. She joined the team in 1996 and has made her way from working in sales to the office. She tells us, “Choosing the right business for your flooring purchase is important. This is an investment that you look at every day for many years. We’ve had customers share with us that the carpet we installed 30 years ago still looks good; they just want a change.”

Three Generations In The Family Business

Michelle’s parents, Mary and Grant Souter, and her brother Grant Jr. are all part of the family business. Howard Souter (Grant’s father) along with Grant’s uncle, Grant Dodd, opened the business in 1959 as a paint and wallpaper store on Byron Street in Whitby. They eventually added stylish brands of drapery and carpet; then continued to focus mainly on carpet along with additional brands of flooring. In the year 2000, Dodd & Souter Flooring moved to its present location at 1624 Dundas Street, East.

“Our Customers Report That We Have Great Salespeople and Installers.”

Michelle expresses to us, “Dodd & Souter Flooring is not commission-based; our main focus is to ensure that our customers receive the right products to fit their needs. Most of our sales team has been with us for many years and have great experience. They love to help our customers and enjoy hearing about their flooring stories.”

Free In-Home Estimate & Installation

There’s no charge for a team representative to come to your home (or business) to take measurements. This information is then utilized to provide you with a free estimate that’s precise. Our professional installers have been with us for 9 to 20 years and we provide a

2-year warranty on flooring installation.

Environmentally-Friendly Flooring

The industry is evolving to create new and unique flooring colours, patterns, and designs. Flooring is an artistic expression and the right flooring can last for years while hiding wear and tear from everyday use. People are transforming their homes to be lighter and brighter. They are seeking flooring materials that are more sustainable and environmentally friendly. We have listed a few options that are available at Dodd & Souter Flooring:

• Canadian-made Flooring- responsible manufacturing processes is a must.

• Flooring that will hold up for years.

• Flooring materials that can be reused or recycled.

• Biodegradable Flooring

• Plant Fiber Carpet

• Carpet made from recycled materials.

• Cork Flooring

• Linoleum Flooring such as Marmoleum.

• Wood Flooring that is certified by FSC(Forest Stewardship Council).

• Engineered Hardwood with Floorscore Certification (minimum indoor air pollution/offgas).

• Adhesives and sealants with low-VOC(Volatile Organic Compounds).

Tips

We encourage you to borrow flooring samples (at no cost). This is a very important step when choosing the right style of flooring. Samples may appear different from when they are in our showroom because the lighting and wall colour(s) in your home can affect the look of the flooring you’re interested in purchasing.

Some websites have “room visualizers” where you can choose a flooring image and then place it into a room scene such as a bathroom, bedroom, or living room. You can also choose a carpet colour and upload it to your own picture. In this way, you can visualize the flooring in the exact place where you want it laid. Remember, we’ll lend you samples to ensure the colouring is a match. The backlighting on a computer or phone can change the look. Come on in, have a visit and we’ll get you started.

Paul introduced his love of British food to the growing online world and, in 2007 he launched SIMPLYBRITISHFOODS.com.
